Read these 16 reverse harem books while listening to the rerecorded album Red by Taylor Swift

After sobbing my eyes out reading Death by Laura Thalasia, I needed a fun post to lift my soul (pun absolutely intended).

Taylor Swift is releasing her rerecorded album Red  on November 12. I’m a HUGE fan. So somehow, my exhausted mind combined my glee for the album along with my thoughts about reverse harem. Before I knew it, I thought about RH books that sort of jive with her original songs.

I present to you my list of sixteen reverse harem novels that in some way align with each song on her original album.

Enjoy!
Paige

State Of Grace (Taylor's Version)

And I never (never) saw you coming
And I’ll never (never) be the same
This is a state of grace
This is the worthwhile fight
Love is a ruthless game
Unless you play it good and right
These are the hands of fate
You’re my Achilles heel
This is the golden age of something good
And right and real
-Taylor Swift

The book begins with our MC finding her fated mate. They spend a passionate night together, but in the morning, she is left alone. She wasn’t expecting to meet him, and throughout the book, she realizes he is her ‘Achilles heel.’

Red (Taylor's Version)

Touching him was like
Realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you
Memorizing him was as
Easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song
Fighting with him was like
Trying to solve a crossword and realizing there’s no right answer
Regretting him was like
Wishing you never found out that love could be that strong
-Taylor Swift

Besides the obvious title tie-in…our poor MC. She’s been lied to for quite a long time and is suddenly thrust into a world she had no idea existed. Then she finds not one but several potential mates, and everything she thought she knew goes up in smoke.

Treacherous (Taylor's Version)

Put your lips close to mine
As long as they don’t touch
Out of focus, eye to eye
‘Til the gravity’s too much
And I’ll do anything you say
If you say it with your hands
And I’d be smart to walk away
But you’re quicksand
-Taylor Swift

I loved this take on the alpha type within the shifter universe. Our MC is an Alpha female wolf in a world where that just isn’t possible. She has to find a more dominant mate than she, yet she is in love with a less dominant wolf. Their love will doom them both, but they can’t walk away. Loved this book; I definitely recommend it.

I Knew You Were Trouble (Taylor's Version)

And the saddest fear
Comes creepin’ in
That you never loved me
Or her
Or anyone
Or anything
Yeah
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
-Taylor Swift

She is on badass MC. The book begins with her husband killing her, and she is out for blood. LOVED this book. This is definitely a darker book, and I was rooting 100% for the MC the entire time. Screw that man; he was definitely trouble.

All Too Well (Taylor's Version)

Time won’t fly, it’s like I’m paralyzed by it
I’d like to be my old self again
But I’m still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week
‘Cause it reminds you of innocence
And it smells like me
You can’t get rid of it
‘Cause you remember it all too well, yeah
‘Cause there we are again when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well
-Taylor Swift

I struggled with what book to pair with this iconic song. Taylor Swift is releasing a 10-minute song on her rerecorded album, along with a short film, all surrounding the events in this song. I, along with almost every TS fan, adore this song. It touched me so deeply when it was released, and finding a book that would match it was difficult. I ultimately landed on Seeking Asylum due to the relationship between our MC and her ex-finance.
A substantial portion of this novel deals with the MC and her grief. She was betrayed by her best friend, the boy who told her stories, thinking his future was with her. Our MC is paralyzed when the novel begins, and we can see her slowly healing. Yet, at the same time, the rest of the world literally falls apart.
This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, series that is currently being written. I ADORE both books and cannot wait for the third. I feel like the author handles incredibly hard topics with grace and honesty. I highly, highly recommend it.

22 (Taylor's Version)

It feels like one of those nights
We ditch the whole scene
It feels like one of those nights
We won’t be sleeping
It feels like one of those nights
You look like bad news
I gotta have you
I gotta have you
Ooh, ooh, yeah, yeah
-Taylor Swift

There were two books I had slated for this song, and I just had to go with A Cock & Bull Story. The tone of the song jives with the tone of the book.

Our MC is in college and stumbles upon a group for shifters that are lower down the food chain. She is totally focused on having some wild nights and having anyone she wants. However, the entire purpose of attending the group is to try and change her ways. Super funny, I love the series. Recommend.

I Almost Do (Taylor's Version)

And I just wanna tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don’t
I almost do
I almost do
-Taylor Swift

I read the first two and thoroughly enjoyed the books. Our MC is learning to question her actions and beliefs. Although this song is written as a love song, I’m stretching it to fit our MC thinking about her home and almost reaching out or contacting them.

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor's Version)

we are never ever, ever getting back together
We are never ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together
(We) ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh (getting back together)
(We) ooh, ooh, ooh
Oh (getting back together)

F* her husband. Her husband kidnaps her and keeps her against her will for years. She finally escapes him, and I can hear the MC screaming that they are never EVER getting back together. Hell will come to earth before that happens. Another series I love, looking forward to continuing it.

Stay Stay Stay (Taylor's Version)

Stay, stay, stay
I’ve been loving you for quite some time, time, time
You think that it’s funny when I’m mad, mad, mad
But I think that it’s best if we both stay
Stay, stay, stay
You took the time to memorize me
My fears, my hopes and dreams
I just like hanging out with you
All the time
All those times that you didn’t leave
It’s been occurring to me
I’d like to hang out with you
For my whole life

The MC and her children break down, and the LIs repeatedly ask them to stay verbally and non-verbally. The men take the time to get to know her and her children, and they all just enjoy being together. This is a lovely series, and I’ll be reading the next book once it is released.

The Last Time (Taylor's Version) [feat. Gary Lightbody]

This is the last time I’m asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I’m asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye
You find yourself at my door
Just like all those times before
You wear your best apology
But I was there to watch you leave
And all the times I let you in
Just for you to go again
Disappear when you come back
Everything is better

Snow Patrol is one of my all-time favorite bands, so this has always been a personal favorite. I’m pairing it with Vaugn in good faith; I really enjoyed the first three books of the series. It sounds like this book will focus on priorities, and the MC may be feeling a bit forgotten about. Let me know if I’ve gotten it totally wrong!

Holy Ground (Taylor's Version)

I was reminiscing just the other day
While having coffee all alone, and Lord, it took me away

Back to a first-glance feeling on New York time
Back when you fit in my poems like a perfect rhyme

Took off faster than a green light, go
Hey, you skip the conversation when you already know
I left a note on the door with a joke we’d made
And that was the first day

Oh boy, how to talk about this one without saying too much…
Our MC is in love and feels like it is returned. However, when it is time to pledge themselves, her LI rejects her. So she leaves her pack and tries to move on with her life. But she never forgets him. I need to finish this series, really enjoyed this book.

Sad Beautiful Tragic (Taylor's Version)

We had a beautiful magic love there
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair
In dreams
I meet you in warm conversation
We both wake
In lonely beds
In different cities
And time
Is taking its sweet time erasing you
And you’ve got your demons
And darlin’ they all look like me
‘Cause we had a beautiful magic love there
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair

Up until this book, I have either recommended or not said one way or the other. That ends now.
WTF happened with this book? I really don’t recommend it. My hubs know (MONTHS LATER) the character’s name in this book that broke my heart. Broken. Thousands of pieces. I’m still not recovered. This is totally Sad Beautiful, Tragic. I could write an entire post based entirely on the ending of this book. Someday I’ll try the author again, but I’m still bitter for now.

The Lucky One (Taylor's Version)

And they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one
Yeah, they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one
But can you tell me now, you’re the lucky one
Oh, oh, oh…
Now it’s big black cars, and Riviera views
And your lover in the foyer doesn’t even know you
And your secrets end up splashed on the news front page
And they tell you that you’re lucky
But you’re so confused,
‘Cause you don’t feel pretty, you just feel used.

Our MC is famous, and the police aren’t taking it seriously when a stalker breaks into her house. She hires three bodyguards to protect her. She is the epitome of the ‘lucky one’ referenced in this song. She definitely doesn’t feel lucky; she feels used. This is a faster read, and I enjoyed it.

Starlight (Taylor's Version)

He said, “Look at you, worrying so much about things you can’t change
You’ll spend your whole life singing the blues
If you keep thinking that way”
He was tryna to skip rocks on the ocean saying to me
“Don’t you see the starlight, starlight
Don’t you dream impossible things”

I read this one a fair bit ago, so hopefully, my memory is correct. The story begins with the LI’s trying to save their college newspaper. Our MC starts writing a serial that goes viral, but she worries about the subject matter. The LI’s want her to dream bigger, to dream of impossible things. This is a duet. I don’t recall re-reading it, but I did give it high marks on Goodreads to recommend it.

Begin Again (Taylor's Version)

I’ve been spending the last eight months
Thinking all love ever does
Is break and burn, and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe
I watched it begin again
-Taylor Swift

The characters are all beginning again. They are working both on their art and themselves, and it was a nice love story to read.
